Digital Camera Derived Watermarks

In an era of technology, forensics and investigators need advanced techniques to root out criminals. Not too long ago, it was discovered that printed pages could generally be traced back to the specific printer that spooled them based on hidden watermarks. Although not as specific, a new technique has been developed that allows forensics to determine the camera that shot a digital photograph. The process works because each camera employs a particular algorithm to combine the detected RGB colors into a single pixel. By examining the color combinations as individual matrices, an investigator can deduce how the colors were chosen and thereby derive the algorithm which identifies the camera.
