The Apollo 17 mission in December 1972 marks the last time an American walked on the moon. There had been discussion before for an American return to the moon under President Bush's Constellation project which aimed to put Americans back on the moon by 2020. But budget setbacks have ended the opportunity for NASA, especially in the wake of SpaceX's recent success at achieving orbital flight.
