In the second World War, familiar catch-phrases like "Loose Lips Sink Ships" advised Americans through advertising campaigns to keep mum about wartime activities. Today, OPSEC (OPerational SECurity) faces the challenge of the Internet’s open stage and global audience as bloggers document their lives. Such instantaneous access to news has certainly caused trouble for the coalition’s public relations through such incidents as Abu Ghraib and the recent alcohol, rape and murder issues. To mitigate embarrassment and security leaks, MNC-I enacted restrictions on soldier’s network access and the Pentagon regularly monitors blogs for content.

While America tends to regard the Internet as a continuous outlet for public relation disasters, insurgent groups have capitalized on its capacity for reach. An analysis by Rand reveals that nearly every FTO (Foreign Terror Organization) maintains a website that is appealing to modern culture’s computer savvy, video game generation through dynamic content and multimedia. Despite their differences, terror networks utilize the Internet for command and control, recruiting and propaganda. Videos provide instant notoriety for the groups by garnering sympathy or fanning the flames of hatred. I think it’s worth reminding OmniNerd users (many of whom have military affiliations through service, family or acquaintance) to be cognizant of the information posted (NOTE: In 2016, OmniNerd has ceased to provide its content on-line). OmniNerd received a news post on 5 August from the Army of the Mujahideen containing links to graphic videos depicting death and violence to US service members. This means OmniNerd’s content was profiled by terrorists either for the user base or the types of hosted discussions. While initially rejected, I posted the content here to serve as a reminder of who may be reading your posts and the threat still facing Western states.
